No more ads, Fractile Plus a free app now

There used to be two version of this app – Fractile which was ad-supported, and Fractile Plus which was for sale. No more: The ad-supported version has been retired, and Fractile Plus is now available for free. Enjoy! I’d also like to extend my thanks to all the folks who have supported the app so far.

App updates: It seems the main feature requests right now are a bookmark / sharing system, and color cycling. The bookmarks will require some thought to get a nice implementation and may require some form of cloud-based storage / voting scenario. Color cycling is largely a UI issue (I’d prefer not to clutter up the interface with more buttons.) Also the app currently only uses a single worker thread to compute the fractals, it should be simple to spawn an extra one to gain an 80+% speed-up on the iPad 2.

I enjoy your program and am using it make some quantatative measurements on the Mandelbrot set. It would useful how the colors are related to the escape values. Could you supply those numbers? It doesn’t matter what the pallet is.

    Thank you.

But George, I’d love to make a contribution. This is a joyful program and is merits a reward.

Hi Richard – this project is more a hobby than a commercial venture. The initial earnings will cover the apple developer fee for a few years, and that’s all I need. Thanks though!

Hi – Fractile is a bad program to do this because it’s hard/impossible to get exact outputs. The stuff on-screen has been corrupted by bilinear interpolation and dithering, whereas the saved JPEGs are corrupted by JPEG compression.

As for the palettes – each one can map iteration->color in a different way – generally color varies as iterations^n, where n is usually <1. The best way to observe the mapping is to look at the color palette screen, the color bar at the bottom shows how the colors vary with iterations.

Incredible! I have been into fractals since 80′s and ur app ROCKS on iPhone4. I cannot wait to check it out on iPad.

If u make a native iPad3 version, I would be prepared to pay 10€ for it.

Any chance of support for the new iPad? It’s clearly not using all of the available resolution, because when I save an image and compare it to inside the app, the one in photos looks *stunning*.

Love your mandelbrot explorer, thanks a lot! Bookmarks and custom colors would be most incredible. I’m ready to press the donate button :)

  7. Alf says:

This is the easiest and coolest fractal program I ever played with. It keeps me up at night and fills up my iPads harddrive with images. If I could wish for something in the next version it would be customizable colors and color algorithms, super high res on export images (with png). I would pay easily for that! But most important, thank you for many hours of fun exploration!

  8. Andrew says:

Thanks for the great app. I think more iterations would make it even better.

Why don’t you at least add the donate button in menu? I’m not the type to casually donate, but for a certain reason your app happened to be of much help to me. It’s not perfect (ipad3 resolution, a couple more dark palettes and equation changing would make it better) but it still is worth financial support.

I’m new to this app, it’s fantastic!
One feature suggestion – is it possible for the app to use inertial scrolling? Seems a little cumbersome when zoomed quite far in to keep a finger on to scroll, it would be great to scroll with a flick like in browsers, lists and other apps.

Oh Boy!! I don’t know what I am doing wrong! I downloaded Fractile.. It asked to access my pics .. And thats been it. I want to try my pics but can’t get this to move or zoom or anything.. Is there a tutorial on Youtube or something. I can’t get this one image with the square and + & – off my screen.. No swiping… Dead! I reinstalled again .. Nothing! Help!!

    • georgklein says:

Not sure I understand? It’s not an image viewer.. it can save images to your photo roll, but won’t do anything with images already there. This program is for making pictures of the Mandelbrot and Julia fractals. As soon as it launches, you should be able to move around and zoom in and out of the Mandelbrot set.

Amazing app. Thank you. I hope it is okay with you to include a couple of images generated by the program in a posting on my blog.
